The brief was to redesign the Library, atrium and building BA area with connectivity, additional program and establishing public realm.
My proposal statement:
I believe that Swinburne Hawthorn should be an inviting and exciting place that creates community. This new building is a series of multi-use interactive spaces that connect to the public realm, facilitates learning while encourages collaboration and fosters a sense of belonging, hence creating a vibrant heart for Swinburne.

The overall design is based on openness, flow, and rhythm at the same time minimising barriers.
-
Modern urban public space
-
Interspersed, occluded and split relationships of multiple volumes
-
Functional core
-
Transparent and stretched horizontal transportation
-
A clear vocabulary of structural elements
-
Enhancing Swinburne’s identity by introducing multifunctional programs such as exhibitions in the basement, a restaurant on the third floor, a multifunctional hall and communication, make it full of humanistic life

I’ve taken inspiration from urban life and injected modern design aesthetics into our more than a century-old campus that dates back to 1908, to create a sense of place.
There's a linkage between the spaces and continuous paths of travel via the external stairs (shown green in exploded axo).
This central atrium is created to foster social cohesion. It also unifies the building’s volumes. Lifting the building up to allow access through to all sides and to the basement, also activate the plane in one location by creating an amphitheatre underneath the library that can be used for having lunch, hosting talks and more.

Currently there are inaccessible buildings and poorly maintained spaces that make campuses unattractive and unwelcoming. The original tall and enclosed construction of building BA can give a sense of oppression with the narrow road along the railway.
To enhance permeability on the ground plane, the building’s colonnade extends the public space, turning the project into an inviting presence at street level. The voids and staircases link the various functions, shaping a diverse experience where activities interweave.
